When File Buddy compares two inventories of the same disk or folder, it reports the results in four text files, named Deleted Items, Modified Items, Moved Items, and New Items, placing the files in a folder it creates when it does the comparison. A full pathname is written to the appropriate file for each deleted, modified, moved, and new item. Paths to folders end in “:”.
You can use this to learn exactly what items an installer places on your disk, or just to look at how much gets modified during the day. To see what items an installer places on your disk, just create an inventory immediately before the install, and another immediately after the install. Then compare the two. In case the application creates any default files or folders when it runs, you may want to run the application once before creating the “after” inventory.
When viewing the results of a comparison, remember that several files (such as the Desktop DB file) are modified on a fairly regular basis.
In the near future, File Buddy will create a file list of items in the New Items file, to facilitate application removal.
